U.S. Pledges GHG Emissions Reduction This Decade, With Conditions

The Obama administration will formally announce a plan today to cut GHG emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels over the next decade, numerous media outlets reported. Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, was quoted by USA Today as saying: "It's a real opportunity to lead by example, and not just for the environment but to spur innovation and create jobs and savings."

The Los Angeles Times reported that the goal would bolster the global warming deal brokered at the Copenhagen climate talks last month. The plan was outlined in a letter to United Nations climate officials as the administration formally "associated" itself with the Copenhagen Accord by making the pledge, the newspaper reported.
