Sen. Boxer Plans Start of Committee Work on Climate Bill

After three days of hearings, Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said she intended for the committee to begin work on her climate change bill by Tuesday, Reuters reported. Boxer declared: "We're going forward hopefully early next week, that's our plan."

Boxer asked Republicans not to boycott the bill markup sessions, and said they should instead offer their bill amendments. However, committee Republican spokesman Matt Dempsey said the "boycott is on the table as an option," and "we're certainly heading in that direction." Committee ranking member James Inhofe, R-Okla., said his party wanted "to give enough time to get adequate analysis" on the bill by EPA.

Meanwhile, Boxer denied a claim from Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, that Democrats designed the bill so that "California's going to make out like a bandit" to the detriment of regions using coal-based generation.
