U.N. Secretary General Urges U.S. to Lead Climate Change Treaty Talks

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on the U.S. to lead U.N. members in reaching agreement on the terms of a new climate change treaty ahead of the December Copenhagen talks, Agence France Presse reported. Ban stated that "an engaged United States can lead the world to seal a deal to combat climate change in Copenhagen."

Ban applauded the agreement between Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on climate change. However, he warned against the possibility of "an indecisive or insufficiently engaged United States" causing "unnecessary, and ultimately unaffordable, delay in concrete strategies and policies to beat this looming challenge." Ban noted: "All agree that climate change is an existential threat to humankind. Yet agreement on what to do still eludes us."
