Senators Hope to Negotiate Deal on Competing Climate Proposals

Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., held talks with Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, in an effort to win their support for a climate change bill, The Hill reported. Cantwell and Collins had proposed a cap-and-dividend GHG emissions program in December, and Lieberman said the three senators hoped to "find common ground" with them.

Lieberman added that although he respected the Cantwell-Collins proposal, he believed a cap-and-trade proposal would be included in the plan offered by himself, Kerry, and Graham. The three senators were meeting with both lawmakers and other parties in the effort to form a consensus on the bill. Lieberman noted: "We are really working hard to get something done this year and we are prepared to compromise."
