Several moderate Democrats said they were resolved to focus on jobs and the economy rather than climate change for the near future, E&E News PM reported. Sen. Robert Casey, D-Pa., was quoted as saying: "What we need to spend the next couple of months on, in a very resolute, focused way, is strategies to create jobs. And that's a job creator, but I don't think it's a short-term job creator."
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said energy legislation would have to be tied to jobs. Brown was quoted as saying: "We'll work on energy issues that lead to job creation, I'd assume things like a renewable portfolio standard, the kind of things that will help us create wind turbines, solar panel jobs, things like that."
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., said he would introduce legislation with Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and other Republicans to reduce NOx, SO2 and mercury, but not CO2, emissions. Carper was quoted as saying: "We're not going to start there. We're going to start with three of those P's. And we'll leave the last of those out for now."
